My journey into this work began from unimaginable loss.

After losing my late husband and two precious sons to a plane crash, I was left with only a shell of my former existence. Traditional talk therapy and journal writing couldn’t fully capture the depth of my grief. With my background in graphic design, I instinctively began merging art with words in my journals, allowing my soul to speak when words alone failed.

This deeply personal form of art journaling became not just a lifeline, but a powerful tool for healing. Today, it remains a vital part of my own self-discovery — and it’s the foundation for the work I do with others.

At Therapeutic Art Coaching, I serve:

When I’m not guiding others, you’ll often find me spending time with my family or immersed in the vibrant, rhythmic world of taiko drumming as an apprentice — another beautiful reminder of the power of expression beyond words.

FAQs

  • Therapeutic Art Coaching combines creative expression with life coaching principles. It’s a guided process that uses art journaling as a tool for self-discovery, emotional healing, and personal growth. Unlike traditional art therapy, which is clinical in nature, Therapeutic Art Coaching focuses on the process, not the product, and does not require artistic skill.

  • Absolutely not. No artistic talent or experience is required. This practice is about self-expression, not perfection. You’ll be guided to explore color, shape, line, and imagery in ways that feel authentic to you. It’s a safe, judgment-free space to create and reflect.

  • While talk therapy focuses primarily on verbal processing, Therapeutic Art Coaching blends visual journaling, mindfulness, and reflective coaching to access deeper levels of insight. It’s especially helpful when words are hard to find or emotions feel too big to articulate.

  • Each session typically includes:

    • A brief check-in

    • A guided art journaling exercise tailored to your needs or goals

Time for reflection and meaningful conversation

Sessions may also include visualization, breathwork, or life coaching questions to support your journey.

  • For online sessions, you’ll need a mixed-media journal, some basic supplies like watercolors, markers, glue sticks, and collage papers. A full list of suggested materials will be provided. If you attend an in-person workshop, all supplies are included.

  • Clients come to Therapeutic Art Coaching for a wide range of reasons, including:

    • Managing stress and anxiety

    • Navigating life transitions

  • No. While Therapeutic Art Coaching is therapeutic, it is not a licensed form of art therapy. Denise Livingston is a certified Expressive Arts Educator/Coach and Life Coach who draws on trauma-informed expressive arts practices to support emotional wellness and personal growth. If you need clinical or mental health care, you may want to seek support from a licensed art therapist or therapist.
